Introduction

EuroGeoSurveys is an organisation of 33 European Geological Surveys. Our statutory aims are to address the European issues, to promote contribution of geosciences to EU affairs, to assist EU to obtain technical advice and to provide a network between the geological surveys. Introduction - more

IV International Conference on Technology Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers & III International Symposium on Coastal Aquifers and Desalination Plants

From : 24.04.2012   Till : 27.04.2012   Location : Alicante, Spain

Coastal aquifers are perhaps the most need of proper management, because they are the ones that are closer and more accessible to the risk of disease that could affect to the quality of its waters and those with usually a greater demand as a result of profitability irrigation and urban development and tourism in coastal areas, especially those with favourable climate. In recent years, desalination of brackish and sea water by reverse osmosis, high development throughout the Mediterranean coast, makes a strategic resource, as well as brackish water source or a means of direct uptake of sea water. Current experience indicates that better results are obtained in the process of desalination where extraction from seawater is carried out through wells, through the aquifer, rather than direct engagement. Moreover, the desalination of brackish water characteristics in the mixing zone of coastal aquifers is an interesting alternative to increase resources at lower cost than seawater. In addition, experiences of using these aquifers as recipients of brine discharge reclaimed or reused water. TIAC The designation covers the technology conferences on sea water intrusion in coastal aquifers that have been held since 1988 in different cities of the Spanish coast. The Geological Survey of Spain, the Deputation of Alicante and Groundwater Club, in conjunction with other institutions and professional associations have decided to organize a new edition of TIAC in Alicante, which hosted in 2003, and that their good infrastructure will facilitate the international vocation of Congress.
