International Geological Conference GeoHistories of the Gubbio Apennines 2012

From : 05.06.2012   Till : 08.06.2012   Location : Gubbio, Italy

Since the beginning of the last century, the Cretaceous-Paleogene stratigraphic succession outcropping along the Apennine valleys of the Umbria and Marche regions of Central Italy has served as a reference and a sharpener for generations of geologists. Many studies dealing with stratigraphy, paleontology, sedimentology until geodynamics have been developed through the study of the Cretaceous-Paleogene rocks particularly well exposed in the Bottaccione gorge and Contessa valley, near Gubbio, which have been an unusually rich source of geological discoveries that have revealed a great deal about Earth history. In the last five decades, a large number of researches has been carried out there in the fields of the Earth Sciences. The Gubbio area has thus emerged as a classical geological locality. All research’s histories that merge with the landscape and heritages of the medieval towns, ancient villages and roads, castles, and abbeys, which make this part of the Italian Apennines shine. But it's time to define as far we have come. The aim of the Gubbio conference is to provide a forum for geoscientists from all countries and institutions to present, review and discuss recent progress and future perspectives in the fields of stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleontology, geodynamic and structural evolution related to the Umbria-Marche Apennines and particularly linked with the Gubbio sections. The Conference will consist of invited review talks, sessions devoted to specific subjects, poster sessions, a mid-Conference field trip in the Bottaccione gorge and Contessa valley, and a post-Conference round field-trip through the Umbria-Marche Apennines from Gubbio to the Adriatic coast.
